What is “Parawood”??
The Parawood tree, often simply called the rubber tree, is a tree of major economic importance because its sap-like extract (know as latex). The latex can be collected and is the primary source of natural rubber.
The tree can reach a height of over 80 feet. Once the trees are 5-6 years old, the harvest of latex can begin. Older trees yield more latex but they stop producing after 25 years. Once the tree stops producing latex it is cut down for its lumber and another tree is planted in its place.
The wood from this tree, referred to as Parawood or rubberwood, is used in the manufacture of furniture. It is valued for its dense grain, minimal shrinkage, attractive light color and ease of finishing. It is also prized as an “environmentally friendly” wood, as it makes use of plantation grown trees that have been cut down at the end of their latex-producing cycle.
